Inside the construction process, Programming is the phase where to define project’s goals, users’ requirements and to select the most appropriate solution according with available resources, constraints, opportunities and risks. The cognitive framework that results and which inform the design program comes from two areas of inquiry: the Customers’ needs and the Environment as the context of intervention.

According to the teaching philosophy the definition of these two areas (Space program and Environmental Report) and the selection of the solution between different possible alternatives (Optioneering) are realized through a clear formalization / communication of the decisional processes, objectification of the variables considered and the results obtained during the whole process. The outputs of the assignments, here selected from the Environmental Design Lab, show how the computational approach could be useful to extract and quantify the ‘data’ of the phenomena to be treated; to calculate and compare values; to visualize / materialize results.

The examples illustrate some of the techniques used in the first part of the class to define project and place identity, climate profile and hygro-thermal comfort, spatial dimensioning and layout, environmental mass modeling and optioneering  including:

  • Brandscaping & Mood boarding
  • Program and activities break down
  • Standard Universal Thermal Climate Index
  • Adaptive Users comfort using Pshychrimetric chart
  • Functional space syntax and thermal blocks clustering
  • Place inventory and Overlayering
  • Terrain profiling and modeling
  • Viewshed
  • SWOT
  • Climate modeling and passive strategies
  • Heating/Cooling Peak Loads analysis
  • UEI and green metrics
  • Operative Temperature
  • Irradiation and Solar gain analysis

Aim of the assignments is to develop awareness of the mutual interrelation between multiple aspects of the project; specifically, how the architectural morphology can play an important role on energy consumption, functional efficiency and on the quality of the indoor/outdoor environment.
