ENROLLMENT

For iCAD students the first module of the seminar represents a compulsory assignment of the Environmental Class 2022-23 and, as a matter of fact, any application is required.

All other students are required to submit a short CV mainly related to the topic of the seminar explaining how many modules they like to follow.

The CV, in .pdf format, must be sent  within the 29th of March to the following link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1P5T3b5uE4Ba_DDrhfixAQ1zufKgK6iYu?usp=share_link.

CLASS PROGRAM

Language English
Teachers prof. Giuseppe Ridolfi, Giulio Giovanoni, Alessandra Cucurnia. Assistants and Adjunct Lecturers: arch Fabio Forconi, arch PhD Arman Saberi (resp. Computational Design Section of the Mailab laboratory).
Admission This seminar is open to students regularly enrolled in the fourth year of the degree courses of the University of Florence. The enrollment is based on a preliminary students’ curriculum evaluation. The activation requires a minimum of 8 students.
Contents The environmental issue is the reference area of the thematic seminar intersecting the physical-material transformations of the environment and the mutations in human thought and behavior induced by the advent of the Digital Mathema as the new universal language. The seminar aims to critically investigate the relationships between technological change/environmental transformations and creativity/artificial intelligence, focusing attention on the effects that the paradigms of neo-empiricism and operationalism influence their implementation trajectories. Investigation methods are represented by metaphor, analogy, fiction and ‘reversed estrangement’ to be carried out through the techniques of Story Telling and Artificial Intelligence. The results of the seminar are represented by computational figurations of settlements and architectural artefacts capable of acting as experiential objects of the sublime inducing some awareness states on the contemporary condition and envisaging alternative projects beyond the man/environment dualism.
Theme The seminar proposes the human colonization of the largest garbage oceanic island produced by the vortexes of the waters, called The Great Pacific Garbage Patch or otherwise known as The Pacific Trash Vortex located between California and the Hawaiian archipelago.
Activities The seminar includes the following activities: – critical-theoretical readings – qualitative-quantitative analyzes with info-graphic and ideogrammatic representations – collective workshops and thematic discussion tables – narrative writing – artificial intelligence generation of architectural images – three-dimensional modeling and rendering – computer graphic animations and/or digital fabrication – non-linear video editing – elaboration of theoretical essays – editorial graphics -exhibition installation.
Articulation and Credits
The seminar is articulated in three teaching modules with the assignment of corresponding credits as listed below: – First Module: Critical Research and Design Visioning (4 ECTS) – Second Module: Design Development and Project Communication (4 ECTS) – Third Module: Exhibition Installation (2 CFU) The contents of each module is specified in the CLASS CALENDAR. Attendance is also allowed for single modules in order to get the relative credits.
Methods of verification and expected results
The verification takes place through intermediate evaluations aimed at evaluating the following results achieved in the different teaching modules: – individual skills in research, critical analysis, and theoretical elaboration – collaborative attitudes and public presentation – skills in data and concepts graphical presentation – originality and effectiveness of narrative communication – skills in artificial generation of textual and visual contents – ability in architectural sites and artifacts 3D digital modeling – mastery of video animation and non-linear editing technologies – mastery of image post-production technologies – advanced digital manufacturing capabilities – curatorial skills and aesthetic maturity – collaborative attitudes The evaluation of the final profit takes place in a synthetic way through a grade  expressed out of thirty for each single teaching module.

Collaborations
For computational activities, the seminar is supported by the University MAILAB Laboratory – Multimedia Architecture Interaction Laboratory. It also takes place in collaboration with the Murate Art District the research and artistic production center of the city of Florence, which will host the results of some intermediate phases and the conclusion of the seminar with exhibitions and conferences. A feasibility assessment is also underway for an initiative to compare the results obtained with the Composition course at the Bari Polytechnic held by prof. Giuseppe Fallacara who is planning a similar training activity aimed at experimenting with the artificial generation of ideas to inform the stereotomic design of vaulted stone architectures.
